This is an education philosophy which seeks to inspire and empower students while helping them be accountable for their own education. We identify principles and develop character. Its the education of statesmen, leaders, and innovators.

These “projects” are founded on TJed (Thomas Jefferson Education) and use engaging methods like simulations, debate, socratic discussion, colloquiums, classics & activities. We seek to help students discover their own vision & mission for their life & reach their potential. This year our projects prepare students to take a couple of CLEP exams. Learn more below.

Community of peers

Developmentally this age group craves and benefits from peer interaction. But the kind of peers and peer interaction will largely determine the direction of their lives, so we strive to bring out the best in each of them and develop their character not just their minds.

Our mentors are parents too. They have taken many hours of training in the courses they teach and are invested and dedicated to inspiring the next generation of leaders with a love of liberty and the ability to lead with integrity, wisdom and virtue.

OUR
 MISSION
    STATEMENT

“I am here to EDUCATE my heart, mind and spirit so that I may become a LEADER of liberty, integrity and virtue; to LEARN to think for myself, and discern truth from error, and be PREPARED to arise and shine forth that my LIGHT may be a standard for the world.”

Our NAME

Learners & Leaders
     of Liberty & Light

FOUR Ls (4L): Learners, Leaders, Liberty, Light

We live in a time when truth is often seen as either relative or irrelevant. When public education is driven by agenda. When feelings are no longer subject to facts.

Our children are being formed by celebrities, social media and special interest groups, and their opinions are being manipulated by propaganda masquerading as news. The future of families, communities, America and the world will depend on the values our youth hold, their ability to think for themselves and the character they develop.

Let us do our part to share with them the value and principles of LIBERTY, and help them shine a LIGHT on the deception and darkness that is currently gripping, and threatening to destroy the foundations of free society.

All are welcome at 4L, but 4L isn’t for everyone. If you’re interested, please enroll!

You’ll be contacted for an interview to determine if 4L is right for your family.

Torchbearers

At 4L we talk a lot about light; seeking and being the light. Our scholars are learning to shine their lights as leaders for others, so we feel that Torchbearers is the perfect name.

Depending on the number of students and mentors we sometimes offer separate classes for 1st & 2nd TBs.

1st Torchbearers

6th-9th grade. This group is called “Practice Scholars” in TJed. At 4L they’re called 1st Torchbearers. Sometimes we use LEMI projects like Key of Liberty and Shakespeare Conquest in this group and sometimes we find or create classes like a Free Market Economics class based on the Tuttle Twins. They are beginning to invest more into their own education and ready to be more challenged.

2nd Torchbearers

9th-12th. This group is called “Apprentice Sholars” in TJed. At 4L they’re called 2nd Torchbearers. Here we’re really encouraging them to think more deeply and take responsibility for themselves. We’re helping them learn HOW to think, and question, and study, and then articulate their thoughts both on paper and verbally. We’re working towards the deep learning and character of great leaders.

   Scholar Projects

OUR INSPIRATION

Thomas Jefferson was spoken of as a walking library

A highly educated man from New England said of Jefferson, “When he spoke of law, I thought he was a lawyer; when he talked about mechanics, I was sure he was an engineer; when he got into medicine, it was evident that he was a physician; when he discussed theology, I was convinced that he must be a clergyman; when he talked of literature, I made up my mind that I had run against a college professor who knew everything.”

What are Scholar Projects?

Leadership Education Mentoring Institute has created these projects based on the Thomas Jefferson Education philosophy. Some LEMI courses are listed below. This year we will be offering Key of Liberty in the morning and our own project in the afternoon. Learn more about each LEMI project below by clicking on the image.

Scholar projects teach students to:

Think like a philosopher

Read like a lawyer

Write like an author

Speak like an orator

Compute like a mathematician &

Serve like a Statesman

Scholar projects are designed to help students take responsibility for their own education and learn to read and think deeply. We use the power of positive peer pressure and incentives as well as a variety of engaging learning environments to motivate students to fully engage in learning and accomplish challenging tasks. Our trained parent mentors will teach these Scholar projects.

Being well-read is the foundation of a Thomas Jefferson Education. Thomas Jefferson was a voracious reader and learner. He said, “I cannot live without books,” and he read them indeed as though his life depended on it. What was the result? A man of gentle spirit and wisdom who penned the document that changed the world forever with these words, “all men are created equal”; a man who understood the value of education in preserving freedom and one who advocated endlessly for a limited government that ensured individual and inalienable rights. We believe that this kind of education also offers children of today their best chance to make a positive and lasting impact on the world.

This year we offer Key of Liberty (Key) (a LEMI project), and our own project, Facts, Fallacies & Figures (3F) (using a combination of resources including Tuttle Twins and Fallacy Detective, links below). Depending on what your child needs these projects can fulfill Jr. High and High School requirements for English, Government and Economics, as well as electives like Literature and History.

Unlike most classes at other learning centers, students at 4L will not be slammed with endless textbook readings, worksheets and lectures. Instead students will learn with peers in small classes with activities like reading classic novels and biographies, studying historical documents, engaging in discussions, preparing presentations, writing essays, participating in simulations, playing games, doing individual and group projects, holding  debates, and more.

PROJECTS FOR 22-23′

CLEP stands for College-Level Examination Program. This program helps you receive college credit for what you already know, for a fraction of the cost of a college course. Key of Liberty can help prepare your student to take the American Government CLEP exam. Facts, Fallacies & Figures can help prepare your student to take the Microeconomics CLEP exam. Learn more about these exams here:

Subjects covered in the TWO PROJECTS offered this year:

Guide: High School: (HS), Middle School (MS),

Key of Liberty (Key), Facts, Fallacies & Figures (3F)

hs Government

Key: We cover the outlined state standards but you must take both semesters of Key. Use work from the whole year to get credit in semester 2 with your charter.

hs english 9

Key & 3F: Key isn’t just about the American founding. We cover the outlined state standards for English 9 so you cover this class with 4L. For this it is best to take both classes.

hs economics

3F: We cover the outlined state standards in the 3F class. It is best to get credit with your charter for this class in semester 1.

hs history or literature elective

If none of the other subjects work for you, you can always count it as an elective. There may be enough content that you can count it as an elective even if you are using it for these other classes.

ms american history

Key: We deeply cover the American founding in Key. This is sufficient to be your MS History class and provides a great foundation for HS government and HS US history.

ms language arts

Key & 3F: Students will do enough reading and writing to use our classes as their Language Arts. For this it is best to take both classes.

logic, reasoning

3F: It’s so crucial for our youth to understand logic and logical fallacies and how to use reason to sort through information. This is a focus of 3F, but it is also part of Key.

critical thinking

3F: We are surrounded by messages and propaganda. In both 3F and Key students will learn skills and strengthen abilities that will help them discern and discover truth.

Morning Devotional

At 4L we start our day by inviting God to be with us. This is a time to build:

Community      Character      Patriotism

  Principles      and Faith

The students and mentors at 4L share the responsibility of leading and preparing thoughts for this time. We welcome scriptures, quotes, poetry, music and stories that inspire us to be and do better. We pray, recite the pledge of allegiance, share stories, sing uplifting songs, memorize things of value, and celebrate birthdays.

Devotional isn’t mandatory,

but all are invited to join us.

4L is not “religious.” We do not preach a specific religion or require faith in God, but we do teach from a Christian worldview and we do not avoid or banish God.

We welcome people of all faiths or of no faith with two basic rules: nobody should try to disprove or disparage someone else’s religion or convert them to theirs, everyone is welcome to share wisdom and thoughts from their “core book/s”.
